Detroit truetrac vs locker

In most cases the Detroit Truetrac units work with the factory (stock) bearings. The exceptions are: 10 bolt 8.5\8.6 GM axles, the “Performance” Dana 35 & 44 and GM12 bolt with 35 spline axles. No other “special” setup is required. I am considering putting truetrac's front and rear in my 78 w150. It has NP203 and a d44 front and 9.25 rear diffs. It's going to get 90% street use and be my DD in the winter. Searched RCC and read anything that talked about truetrac. Searched the other sites as well.

Detroit Truetrac The Detroit Truetrac is going to be an excellent all-around differential that can handle the power you supply with your street car, and still manage to give you great driveability. The Truetrac will provide a near lock state when the power is applied, but it performs as an open differential until traction is needed.
There is a detroit truetrac for the front as well though. If I dont succeed at the test then I will be deciding between the Eaton Detroit truetrac and arb locker. 2big4arunner , Feb 8, 2016

The Truetrac is a helical gear limited slip differential, not a " locker ". The Truetrac operates by transferring power from the spinning wheel to the wheel with the most traction. If one tire breaks traction, the amount of rotation (or spin) is controlled by transferring the lost traction to the higher traction wheel.

When in good condition and with the correct GL5 spec oil, the Detroit Locker makes the faintest of ticking sounds when cornering. In my 4x4, I had to wind the window down to hear those ticking sounds. The aussie lockers comes with a two year warranty, where as the detroit doesn't. But as a rule of thumb, I don't put lunch box lockers in the rear of vehicles that are going to see a few street miles. If you are going to lock the rear, buy a replacement carrier like an ARB, Detroit, Spool, etc. Or just weld up the spiders.Torsen works well, if you have the budget. Eaton G80 if you are a little short on cash and need a locker (but just don't get too rowdy with the G80).

Mar 05, 2015 · The locker vs. limited slip is an advantage to the G80 over LS units. The torque bias is what makes the Eaton better than the AAM standard limited slip. Although anything times 0 is still zero for a wheel in the air - parking brake can help transfer torque to the wheel with grip.
